Merry Christmas

I wanted to give you a peek at our Christmas card this year...

I wasn't planning on doing photo cards this year, but I got a code from Shutterfly that got us 15 cards for less than $1, so I took advantage of it. Sadly, we suck at taking pictures together, so I had to find one that I hated the least and this one was the winner. It's from our trip to the zoo with our nieces back in August.

I hope you have a lovely day full of joy and good cheer!

What is your favorite Holiday season tradition?

I love everything about the Holiday season. I love decorating the house and tree. I love baking treats. I love singing Christmas songs in church and going to midnight Mass. I love spending time with family and friends.

Do you have a certain Holiday movie you watch more than others? If so what is it?

I don't really watch holiday movies a lot, but I highly enjoy Elf.

Show us your favorite decoration or Pinterest decoration you wish you could have

Our first Christmas in our house, I made this wreath. I bought a plain wreath and added some ornaments that I picked up cheap at Michael's.

This is my favorite ornament on our tree. We picked it up on our honeymoon.

I love our Nativity because it's from my childhood. Every year, the children at my childhood church received a piece of the set. I have all the pieces that my brothers and I got over the years.

Favorite Holiday song?

O Come, O Come Emmanual
O Holy Night
White Christmas
All I Want for Christmas is You

Favorite Holiday dessert?

I always make a Toll House pie for Christmas dessert. I also love to bake all different kinds of cookies throughout December and freeze them for Christmas.

What is on your wish list this year?

Some sweaters, kitchen gadgets, comfy clothes, and some movies. Apparently I'm feeling domestic.

I don't, but I'd like to volunteer with kids. In high school and during my retail job, I liked buying toys for underprivileged kids and helping out with parties for them.

The one I remember the best was my American Girl doll, Molly. I still have her saved away for a future daughter.

Merry Christmas

He was born in an obscure village,
The child of a peasant woman.
He grew up in still another village,
Where he worked in a carpenter shop
Until he was thirty.

Then for three years
He was an itinerant preacher.
He never wrote a book.
He never held an office.
He never had a family or owned a house.
He didn't go to college.
He never visited a big city.
He never traveled two hundred miles
From the place where he was born.
He did none of the things
One usually associates with greatness.
He had no credentials but himself.

He was only thirty-three
When the tide of public opinion turned against him.
His friends ran away.
He was turned over to his enemies.
And went through the mockery of a trial.

He was nailed to a cross
Between two thieves.
While he was dying,
His executioners gambled for his clothing,
The only property he had on Earth.
When he was dead,
He was laid in a borrowed grave
Through the pity of a friend.

Twenty centuries have come and gone,
And today he is the central figure
Of the human race,
And the leader of mankind's progress.

All the armies that ever marched,
All the navies that ever sailed,
All the parliament that ever sat,
All the kings that ever reigned,
Put together have not affected
The life of man on Earth
As much as that

One Solitary Life.

Merry Christmas

I love sending out Christmas cards every year. And since I couldn't send one to all of you, I'm sharing this year's card here on the blog.

Since we don't have kids yet, we always include a picture of our other babies, our cats, Mimi and Sammy.I used Instagram pictures, so Sammy came out a little purple. It's artistic.

This year's cards are from Tiny Prints and I love them. I did get them mostly free thanks to a sponsored post. But I really do like Tiny Prints and their products. These are the best cards we've ever had.

Did you send Christmas cards this year?

Sorry that I didn't blog much last week. I had a very busy week since I worked every day. There is something going around the schools and causing a lot of the kids to be sick and I got some of it in the middle of the week, plus I had some TMJ problems again along with some other dental pain. So, I basically worked and then came home slept until it was time to go back to work all week. Hopefully this week will be better.

Tiny Prints Holiday Cards

Now that it's November and Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away (What?!) I'm getting excited about Christmas. I'd love to just start decorating now, but I'll settle for listening to Christmas music and planning some shopping until the weekend after Thanksgiving.

One thing I'm not putting off though is picking a Christmas card. I love the tradition of sending and receiving cards and I'm looking forward to finding those festive envelopes in the mail.

Of course, once I started thinking about Christmas cards, I started by checking out my new favorite source for paper products, Tiny Prints. I had such a great experience ordering the baby shower invitations from them, that I was eager to work with them again.

Here, let me show you some of my favorite Christmas Cards from Tiny Prints.

I love the plaid design on this one. Plaid just says Christmas to me!

I like how this one looks like a chalkboard.

I'm a big fan of white Christmases, so I love the sentiment of this card.

I also found some cards that I like that don't apply to us this year, but I wanted to share them with you because I like them so much.

This is a great card for a newly married couple. Christmas cards are a great use of those wedding pictures.

If we had had a baby this year, this is so the Christmas card we'd be sending. How cute is this? I love it!

If you're looking for Christmas cards this year, I highly recommend you check out Tiny Prints. If you're looking for a deal, be sure to check out their Special Offers page.

Also, be sure to check out Tiny Prints on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and their own blog.

Christmas Card 2011

With this weekend full of Christmas celebrations, I'm working like a madwoman today to finish everything. But, I thought I'd take a minute and share with you our Christmas cards for the year.

I originally wasn't going to do a picture card because we actually don't have any pictures of us together this year. We suck at asking people to take pictures of us on our trips. But, I ended up getting a code for 10 free cards from Shutterfly and a free shipping code, so I had to do it!

We just had my mom take some pictures of us on Thanksgiving in front of a pine tree on her property. This is actually my pine tree. I got it as a sapling back in the fourth grade and it's really grown since then!

Since I only got 10 free cards, this card only went to family. Our friends and coworkers got a cute penguin card I bought after Christmas one year at Target.

We used the inside of the card to document some of our milestones of 2011.

And I added a little fun to the back of the card for anybody that turns it over.

Well, I'm off to finish some baking and I really must get those presents wrapped! I hope everybody has a great weekend and a Merry Christmas!

Gifts for Teachers

With Christmas less than 2 weeks away, it's time to start wrapping up the shopping and soon the children will be out of school. And for some people, that means it's time to get the teachers gifts.

As a teacher, I've gotten gifts over the years and I thought I'd share a bit of wisdom about what exactly to give teachers. I was inspired to write about this topic after reading this post over on one of my favorite deals blogs, Living Rich With Coupons. I actually cringed while reading their list of suggested gifts and I knew I had to say something.

First of all, please don't feel obligated to buy anything. I don't expect gifts. The thought is nice, but it's certainly not mandatory. And honestly, a homemade card from your child is one of the best gifts I could get.

Now, let's take a look at that list of suggested gifts.

  • Coffee - Please, no. I don't drink coffee, so buying me a bag of ground coffee would be a waste. I'd probably just put in the lounge. A gift card to Starbucks would be OK though since they have other drinks. I personally love their Vanilla Bean Fraps, so I'd use it.
  • Magazine Subscription - I'm not a big magazine reader and how do you know if already have a subscription?
  • Inspirational Items - I assume this means "teacher" items and the like. Again, please, no. Teachers get a lot of this stuff and most of it is just useless decorations. My own mother is guilty of buying me this kind of stuff. It's not my style and I hate feeling like I have to display it because a student gave it to me.
  • Chocolate - Only if you know for sure that the teacher likes it. For me, this would be great, but one of my teacher friends is actually allergic to chocolate, so this would not be good for her.
  • Books - Yes, teachers do love books. However, I would encourage you to buy a gift certificate to a bookstore instead of a specific book. Teachers often have vast libraries and buying a book they don't already have may be tough. And don't expect your child to know if their teacher has a certain book or not. I do my read alouds thematically, so by Christmas, my students have only seen a small portion of the books I own.  And please do not buy a teacher "Chicken Soup of the Teacher's Soul." We all have this book already. I'm pretty sure I got mine as a college graduation present.
  • Gift certificates - Yes please! Especially from a local teacher supply store or bookstore. Teachers use a lot of their own money to purchase items for their classrooms and this would be a great way for them to pick up some new items. Stores such as Target or Walmart are also good ideas, as well as, Amazon or even just a Visa gift card.

Pinterest Sunday

Time for my weekly Pinterest roundup! Every Sunday, I share with you a few of my favorite finds from the previous week.

This week I went with a Christmas tree theme since ours is up and decorated. I love decorating the tree!

How about a Christmas tree pizza? I'm thinking this may be a great idea for dinner on Dec. 23rd while I'm finishing up my wrapping and baking.

Ever since I saw a white wreath  with brightly colored ornaments on it at Target, I've been obsessed with white wreaths and trees. I never used to like them, but I can't resist how pretty they look with pops of color. This rainbow tree is so pretty, I want to go buy a white tree and do this myself!

Even though I hate snow, I love how it looks on trees and bushes with lights. The lights shining through make the evil stuff look so pretty magical.

All I Want for Christmas

With Christmas only a few weeks away, I'm thinking about what I'd like to find under the tree this year. I thought I'd share my list with you.

Jenn's Christmas List
1. We don't watch DVDs very often because we're addicted to Netflix Instant Watch. But there are a few movies I'd like to own. As a Disney nut, I have to have the all the latest movies. Tangled is my new favorite. I also have to have my Harry Potter movies.

2. Gift cards - We still need a lot of decor for our home, so gift cards to Ikea and HomeGoods will come in handy next time we take a trip to Ikea. And there is always something I want on Amazon.

3. Citrus juicer - A lot of things on my list are kitchen things because I always think of things I want/need, but never buy for myself. We make fajitas often and the marinade calls for lime juice. This juicer would be easier to use than our other one.

4. Vera Bradley Lanyard - Now that I'm subbing again, I have to wear an ID badge at school. A lot of teachers have pretty lanyards and I'd like a Vera Bradley one.

5. Silpat - Another kitchen gadget. This would come in handy for my baking.

6. Magazine Subscriptions - I'd like a subscription to All You because it has a lot of coupons inside and I LOVE coupons. They also have articles about saving money, which we definitely need to do. I'd also like a subscription to Kraft Food & Family magazine. I use to get it for free and it features lots of recipes and sometimes coupons.

7. A cute apron - I tend to make a mess in the kitchen, especially while baking and an apron would keep the mess off my clothes. I like this cute cherry one. It matches my kitchen.

8. A cupcake carrier - I need this to take cheesecake to the store. Right now I just use a bunch of different containers to carry them, but this would be much easier.

9. Breadbox - I've been wanting a breadbox for awhile now and would love a retro red one to match our kitchen.

10. This pretty necklace is only $10 from Kohl's and the proceeds are donated support the fight against breast cancer.

And the star on the top of my tree? A Kindle. I'm sure I won't find it under the tree this year, but I'll keep saving my Amazon credits and eventually I'll get one.

What's on your Christmas list this year?

Christmas Cards

A while back, I told you about Shutterfly's Christmas cards and to get free cards. I thought I'd share with you what card we ultimately went with. It might surprise you, because it isn't one that I considered in my previous post.

So, why this card?  To be honest, my husband picked it.  I made up some choices and he wasn't very thrilled with any of them.  He wanted to use this picture because it wasn't posed. I desperately made some more choices for him and threw this one in and surprisingly, he liked it!  I liked that it has French on the front because I love French (took it for 5 years and spent 2 weeks in France one summer).

I originally wanted a card with the year on it and since this one doesn't, I fixed that on the inside.  Since this is a folded card, Shutterfly gave me the option of having another photo (or two or three) on the inside.  I included another photo of us posing with our wedding cake and below it put our wedding date.

Once I finally ordered the cards, they came fairly quickly and were packaged well.  The cards are very nice quality with thick cardstock.

Everybody I have given a card to has raved about how much they love them and how pretty they are.  I love that I got such a great deal for fabulous cards and found yet another use for our wonderful wedding pictures!

My First DIY

Now that the baking and gift wrapping is finally done, I can share with you my first DIY project for our home.  It also happens to be a Christmas decor project.

I've seen wreaths like this one for sale in various stores.

Most stores want anywhere from $30 on up for a wreath like this one.  I really wanted one for our front door, but I did NOT want to pay that much money for a wreath.

As it turns out, you don't have to!  (I'm a terrible blogger and did not document the process, so bear with me.) I bought a 24" wreath at Christmas Tree Shop for about $7.  I sprung for a lighted one, but you could go even cheaper with just a plain wreath.  I bought a set of ornaments for $2.50 at Michael's. (They were 1/2 off!) and some green twist wire for $1.50 at Meijer.

For just $11, I came up with this...

Pretty cute right? I'm on the hunt for the right ribbon to perhaps make a bow for the top. (I actually took off a pretty cheap looking "velvet" bow that came with the wreath.)  And bonus, I can always change the ornaments if I decide to change the look.

I've never been very crafty, but I'm pretty proud of my very first decor DIY project!

My Favorite Ornament

I showed you our Chirstmas tree earlier, but I didn't show you my favorite ornament.  It's a new one for this year and it was the first one I put on our tree.

Isn't it cute? We picked it up at the Christmas store at Downtown Disney on our honeymoon. I had in my carry-on and I was super paranoid that I was going to break it on our way home.  But, it made it in one piece and now it's in a prominent place on our tree.  I think it's my favorite souvenir from our honeymoon.

Do you have a favorite ornament or Christmas decoration?

Christmas Decorations

I've mentioned before that I love Christmas and I love decorating for Christmas, so I thought I'd share with you some pictures of our decorations. Since this is our first Christmas in our house, it's kind of a hodgepodge of stuff that I've been buying over the years. (I love shopping on the day after Christmas!)

I've already shown you our tree,(which is still topper-less and skirt-less) so let's look at some other decorations.

Here's our "mantel."

We don't have a fireplace, so the top of our entertainment center became our mantel. I actually have ideas for decorating this, but I don't have any of the supplies I need and I'm waiting until after Christmas to buy them. So this year, I went with simple decor. I did buy the garland this year. It's from Target and it was on sale one week, so I grabbed it. The angel lamps hold tea lights and were a gift from a student years ago. I should have taken a closer picture so you could see how pretty they are.

The manger scene has a bit of a story behind it. Every year at the church I grew up in, the children receive a piece of it. How old you are determines which piece you get. I believe you start with the baby Jesus. These are hand carved figures, but I cannot remember where they come from. I believe it is either Israel or an African nation. I have all the pieces that my brothers and I received over the years. I'd like to point out that the 3 figures on the right are shepherds and not the Wise Men as I don't put the Wise Men in until Epiphany. (and yes, I know I really shouldn't put Jesus in until Christmas, but I thought it looked odd without him, so there he is.)

How about a quick look at our dining room table before it became gift wrapping central?
I really don't have ideas for this area because eventually our dining room will actually be decorated and have a theme. So this year, I just used what I had. The runner is from Kohl's and is always on the table as it actually is part of the theme.
This little tree was my Christmas tree when I lived in my college dorm. I got him at Target. I did decorate it with little ornaments, but a certain cat thinks they are fun to play with, so I've been finding them all over the house.

That's the majority of our Chistmas decorations! Next time, I'll show you my very first DIY craft that I made for our house!
