My Favorite Snack at EPCOT

Remember when I actually blogged? And I started a series on my favorites at Walt Disney World? Let's keep doing that!

Today, I want to tell you about my favorite snack at EPCOT.

While we were on our honeymoon at Walt Disney World, we had 2 separate days at EPCOT. The snack I want to tell you about was so good, we had it both days. I had first discovered it while researching things to check out for our trip. It had rave reviews from many other Disney fans on the message boards.

So what is this amazing treat?

 photo IMG_1969.jpg
Please excuse my husband's face. He's incapable of taking a normal picture.
Kaki Gori!

Located in the Japanese pavilion, it's shaved ice and fruit flavored syrup. But this is way better than just any old snow cone. It is shaved much finer and is very smooth. It's the perfect treat for a hot day.

You get your choice of syrup flavor or if you can't choose, you can get a rainbow. I prefer the cherry flavor while my husband enjoyed the tangerine.

We enjoyed it so much, it's a new tradition for us. We'll be heading to the Kaki Gori stand again on our next trip to EPCOT.

My Favorite Restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Sadly, I've let this series slide, but I'm determined to be a better blogger and continue it.

 photo IMG_2029boost.jpg

Today, I want to talk about my favorite restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios. I should mention that it is a quick service restaurant, aka Disney's version of fast food. I think I've mentioned before that M and I didn't spend a lot of time at DHS on our honeymoon. Honestly, this is our least favorite park and the only reason I'd go again is to ride Toy Story Midway Mania.

During our honeymoon visit to DHS, we found ourselves in need of a meal while we wasted time waiting for our FastPass return time for Midway Mania. Originally, I had made a reservation at 50's Prime Time Cafe but canceled it when the budget got hairy.

Prior to our trip, I did some research on the best places to eat in the various parks just to make sure I didn't miss anything good. Most of what I read said that the quick service choices at DHS weren't great, but most seemed to think that one was a particular stand-out. Luckily for us, it just so happened to be right up our alley.

We hit up Toy Story Pizza Planet for lunch and ended up getting individual pepperoni pizzas. They were very tasty and we were both satisfied with our choice.

 photo IMG_2006.jpg

The other great part about the restaurant is the theme. Once again, Disney goes above and beyond. The restaurant is made to resemble the Pizza Planet restaurant from Toy Story and comes complete with lots of arcade games to keep you occupied while you wait.

The restaurant is a popular choice at DHS, but they have plenty of seating with an upper level and outside tables. We ended up sitting outside where it was a little less crowded and noisy.

Toy Story Pizza Planet is a great choice for a quick service meal at Disney's Hollywood Studios and if we ever visit again, we'll probably be back for some tasty pizza and a quick meal.

My Favorite Magic Kingdom Snack

Today, I'm sharing my favorite Magic Kingdom Snack for the Disney Park Challenge.

One of the things I love about going to Disney is all the planning. And I absolutely plan what I want to eat.  One thing I always plan on eating when I'm in the Magic Kingdom?

Dole Whip!

Source
Dole Whip is pineapple flavored soft-serve. I like it swirled with vanilla, but just pineapple is good too. Aloha Isle, in Adventureland, sells these along with Dole Whip floats which is Dole Whip in pineapple juice. Yum!

What makes Dole Whip so special is that it's pretty much only available at the Magic Kingdom, The Polynesian Resort, Disney Land, and Hawaii. It's a special treat that I love to enjoy whenever I'm in the Magic Kingdom.

Favorite EPCOT Restaurant

Today's Disney Park Challenge topic is favorite EPCOT restaurant.

Unfortunately, I've never eaten at a table service restaurant at EPCOT.  Someday, I hope to eat a Via Napoli in the Italy pavilion.

However, I do have lots of experience with the quick service options at EPCOT, so I'm going to cheat and tell you about two of my favorites. After all, 2 quick service restaurants equals 1 table service restaurant, right?

These two restaurants are my must eats whenever I'm at EPCOT. Both of my favorites just so happen to be in the World Showcase.

My first favorite is The Lotus Blossom Cafe in China. I LOVE their orange chicken. I never thought I liked Chinese food until while on a trip with my mom, I tried the orange chicken at the Lotus Blossom Cafe. I quickly discovered that I love orange chicken. Over the years, I've tried orange chicken from various Chinese restaurants and none of them have been as good as the Lotus Blossom Cafe.

My other favorite EPCOT restaurant is the Yorkshire County Fish Shop in the UK pavilion. I'm a huge fan of their authentic fish and chips. Seriously, I crave those chips all the time! And the fish, with a little malt vinegar, is fabulous! It doesn't hurt that they're served by cast members with British accents, either.

My Favorite Restaurant in the Magic Kingdom

Today's Disney Park topic is favorite restaurant in the Magic Kingdom. For this particular question, I am considering restaurant to refer to establishments where you are waited on or as Disney calls them, table service.

I've been lucky enough to have a couple meals at Magic Kingdom restaurants. Picking my favorite was fairly easy.

 photo IMG_2523.jpg

For our honeymoon, I scored a breakfast reservation for The Crystal Palace that got us into the park before it opened. It was great to walk down a nearly empty Main Street USA and get some pictures of the castle without the crazy summer crowds.

Breakfast at The Crystal Palace is also great because the food is so good! It's a buffet and there are lots of choices. I found plenty of things to eat and even my picky husband found lots of things he liked. My favorite food at The Crystal Palace is called Pooh's Puffed French Toast. It's technically on the children's section of the buffet, but I just had to try it. I was delighted to find that it tasted a lot like an elephant ear. I definitely went back for seconds of that!

Another reason I like The Crystal Palace? It's a character meal. We got to enjoy a good meal and meet some characters without having to stand in line.

I loved our meal at The Crystal Palace so much, it's our new Disney tradition. We must have breakfast there on every trip from now on!

Favorite Animal Kingdom Ride

Today's Disney Park Challenge is about my favorite Animal Kingdom Ride. This is an easy one for me because while I love just about all of the Animal Kingdom park, there's one ride I always ride multiple times.

Safari Savanna photo IMG_2062.jpg

I try to ride Kilimanjaro Safaris as much as possible every time I go to the Animal Kingdom. I like to space out my rides over the day for the best chance at seeing as many animals as possible.

Why do I love Kilimanjaro Safaris so much? It's a fabulous way to see so many animals in a more natural setting. And being Disney, the theming is amazing. It's easy to pretend you are actually in Africa on safari here.

Favorite EPCOT Ride

Today's Disney Park Challenge topic is favorite EPCOT Ride. I'm going to have to pick two rides, though.

Normally, I'd say Test Track is my favorite ride at EPCOT. However, it's been totally refurbished since my last trip to the World and it's pretty much a different ride now. So, I'm not sure if I really do like it that much anymore.

I loved original Test Track, though. Yes, it was cheesy but so fun! My favorite bit was at the end when you do 60 mph on the track outside the building.  I'm pretty sure that part hasn't changed, so I'll probably still like that part of Test Track.

My other favorite EPCOT ride is Living with the Land. I just love that it's old school and classic EPCOT. I like floating through the greenhouse and seeing all the experimental ways to grow things.

Favorite Disney's Hollywood Studios Ride

Confession: I don't really like Hollywood Studios.

I know.

I've actually only been there twice. Once, back when it was still MGM and brand new and the second time was on our honeymoon. I wanted to give it another try and see if it was worth it, but we pretty much did a few things we wanted to do and then left to hang out at the resort pool.

However, I do still have a favorite ride at DHS. In fact, I like it so much, it's pretty much the only reason I would go back to DHS on another trip.

 photo IMG_2015.jpg

Midway Mania! We got to the park just after opening, stood in line to get Fastpasses and then basically wasted time until our Fastpass time by riding some other rides.

When we finally rode it, I had so much fun that I wished we had stood in line even if it was ridiculously long. Hopefully next time we're at Disney World, we can ride it more than once.

Favorite Magic Kingdom Ride

First of all, picking a favorite ride at the Magic Kingdom is torture. Since it is my favorite park, I love most of the rides there. It's also the one park where I can actually ride all of the rides.

It happens to be home to some awesome classics. For example...

The Haunted Mansion

Mad Tea Party

It's a Small World

The Jungle Cruise
And while it's hard for me to say which is my favorite, if I only had time to ride one ride at the Magic Kingdom, I'd probably run for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

It is one of the few roller coasters in the world that I actually enjoy and it's the first roller coaster I remember riding. I don't remember much from my first trip to Disney World, but I do remember loving this ride. And now I have to ride it multiple times every time I get to the Magic Kingdom.

Disney Parks Challenge: Favorite Disney Hotel or Resort

My favorite Disney Resort is Animal Kingdom Lodge.

We were lucky enough to stay here on our honeymoon and I absolutely loved it. We splurged for a savanna view room and it was worth every penny.

 photo IMG_1889.jpg

This was our view. We had giraffes every day.

Whenever we were in the room, I loved to sit on our balcony and watch animals. I'd go out here in the morning to put on my sunscreen and in the afternoons to read a book and enjoy the view.

The entire resort is expertly themed and I enjoyed exploring it.

 photo IMG_2321.jpg

They even had flamingos by the pool. The pool isn't as fancy as some of the other resort pools, but it was a good size and I enjoyed relaxing on a lounge chair near the flamingos.

Our room was comfortable and spacious. The breakfast we had at Boma was delicious and the cast members were always friendly.  In fact, one of my favorite things was when was came back to the resort and the security guards said "Welcome home!" whenever they let us into the resort.

Would we stay there again? Absolutely! In fact, I'm pretty sure the Animal Kingdom Lodge has spoiled me for all other resorts. I never want to stay anywhere else. I highly recommend the Animal Kingdom Lodge!

My Favorite Walt Disney World Park

Regular readers of my blog know that I love a good 30-Day* challenge. I've previous ones on my favorite TV shows, Doctor Who and Sherlock. So, it should be no surprise that my new challenge is about another one of my favorite things, Walt Disney World.

*I use 30-Day loosely here as I only do one prompt a week and often skip ones I don't like or don't have an answer for.

The first topic is favorite park. Even with 4 parks to choose from, my choice was easy. My favorite Walt Disney World park is the Magic Kingdom.

 photo IMG_2521lovely.jpg

I enjoy all the parks at Disney World, but if I could only go to one of them, it would definitely be the Magic Kingdom. It's home to a lot of great rides and good food. I will get more into those details over the next few weeks so I won't go into them now.

To me, the Magic Kingdom is classic Disney. It is what people think of when they think Disney World.

What I Love Wednesday: Disney and Vera Bradley

I was ecstatic yesterday to learn that two things I love dearly are combining forces. Disney and Vera Bradley are partnering to bring special Disney inspired Vera Bradley bags to the parks.

They will be releasing two patterns in the fall, Midnight with Mickey and Just Mousing Around.

I LOVE these patterns! I think they're better than most of the patterns Vera Bradley is releasing for their regular fall line this year. Sadly, I don't have a trip to Disney planned this year. Lucky for me though, they will be selling the bags online eventually. I definitely need a Hipster in Just Mousing Around for future trips to Disney World. I can't wait to see what this partnership brings in the future!

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Review

Now that I'm done with our honeymoon recaps, I wanted to do a quick review of our hotel, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.

As I mentioned before, Animal Kingdom Lodge is a deluxe resort. We splurged because it was our honeymoon and we were lucky to get a PIN code that took 40% off the rack room rate. Disney randomly sends out the PIN codes and I had rarely received one prior to planning our honeymoon. Now, I seem to get them all the time. Too bad we aren't planning a trip!

On a previous trip to Walt Disney World 5 years prior, I had checked out the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I had seen the lobby, the pool, and the savanna. I knew then that I wanted to stay there sometime. My husband was sold on it when I showed him the savannas.

I booked a standard savanna view room because if I was staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, I wanted animals outside my room!

Photobucket

And with views like this, I was glad we splurged! I loved sitting on our balcony each morning while eating breakfast and putting on my sunscreen for the day. It was also nice to sit out there in the afternoon reading a book and relaxing.

I've shown you the amazing views, but what does the room look like?

Photobucket

I've raved about Disney's attention to themes and details before and the room was no exception.

Photobucket

I wanted most of the furniture and decor for our vintage safari themed living room.

Photobucket

Here's the sink area of the bathroom:

Photobucket

Yeah, I don't know what I'm doing either...

I didn't get a picture of the other part of the bathroom, but it was your basic shower and toilet.

Photobucket

Here's a close-up of the wallpaper in the sink area. Again, I wanted some for my own home.

Overall, the room was great. It was very comfortable and spacious. I had no problems with our room.

The amenities of the Animal Kingdom Lodge are also great. The pool is nice, the dining options include a quick service food court, a buffet restaurant, and a table service restaurant. There is also a lounge and a wine bar. Although we didn't check it out, there's also a massage and fitness center. There are also various activities throughout the day for children and families.

Would we stay there again? Absolutely! In fact, I'm pretty sure the Animal Kingdom Lodge has spoiled me for all other resorts. I never want to stay anywhere else. I highly recommend the Animal Kingdom Lodge!

Honeymoon Day 11

Sadly, today was our last day of our honeymoon. It was time to check out of the Animal Kingdom Lodge and fly back home. But not just yet! Since I didn't want to get up early and be at the airport in the morning, we weren't scheduled to leave until the afternoon. So, we had some time to kill.

And what better way to kill time than to have a fabulous breakfast? Since I knew we weren't leaving until the afternoon when I made our dining reservations, I got us a breakfast reservation for our last day. I booked us the 'Ohana's Best Friend Breakfast at the Polynesian Resort.

I did this for three reasons: 1. It looked tasty. 2. It features some of my favorite characters. 3. The Polynesian was my second choice of the Deluxe resorts and I wanted to check it out.

So, we finished packing our things and checked out of the Animal Kingdom Lodge and then drove over to the Polynesian. Unlike at the Crystal Palace, our reservation was about halfway through their breakfast service. We checked in at the restaurant and then explored the area around the restaurant while we waited. The restaurants at the Polynesian are actually on the second floor because that's where the monorail picks up and drops off guests.

Apparently, if you're celebrating something, you're supposed to get leis, but we didn't get them even though I had noted on our reservation that it was our honeymoon. I'd also read that they took your pictures before they take you to your table and then later try to sell you the picture, but we never had our picture taken. I can't remember if we were asked or not.

Unlike our other character breakfasts, this was not a buffet. Instead, the meal is served family style, which makes sense since 'Ohana means family. (Can you guess what characters we're going to meet now?)

After greeting us and explaining the breakfast, our server brought us our food.

Photobucket

Sorry, I forgot to take a picture until we'd already dug in. The skillet held scrambled eggs, Mickey waffles, fried potatoes, biscuits, sausage links, and bacon.

There was also a plate of fresh fruit, which you can kind of see on the left there. I can't remember what fruits were on it, but I'm pretty sure I ate a bunch of fresh pineapple.

We also got this basket of bread.

Photobucket

This bread was super yummy. I think I ate all of it by myself because my husband didn't like any of it. Oh well, more for me! One of the breads was a pineapple bread which I love and I think the other had raisins, which I also enjoy. And of course, I had a glass of orange juice. You have to drink orange juice when you're in Florida!

Photobucket

I love that Disney takes the theming of everything so seriously. Doesn't it look like we might actually be in Hawaii?

Since this was a character breakfast, we were waiting to meet the characters. Unfortunately, 'Ohana doesn't seem as organized as the Crystal Palace and we had to wait awhile for the characters to get to us. Plus, they stopped a couple times and did some parades around the restaurants with the kids. But we really wanted to meet these characters, so we tried to eat slowly and be patient. Our server did get us more food and M was quick to request more bacon. He would have been happy with just a skillet of bacon!

Finally, we got to meet the celebrities...

Photobucket

Photobucket

We finally got to meet the big guy!

Photobucket

And the reason for this breakfast, Stitch!  He's my favorite and I gave him a big hug when he arrived.  Lilo was also there, but we didn't really want to meet her and didn't want to spend more time there, so we left.

Since we still had plenty of time until our flight, we decided to explore the resort a little.

Photobucket

The grounds were very pretty.

Photobucket

Here's the gorgeous pool area.

Photobucket

As you can see, the Polynesian has a view of the castle.

Photobucket

Even the slide is themed to match the resort.

Photobucket

Here you can see what the buildings look like.

Photobucket

That's the Disney Wedding Pavilion across the Lagoon.

Photobucket

There's the Grand Floridian.

Photobucket

And there's the Contemporary.

Photobucket

Since the Poly is on the Lagoon, they also have a beach. I've heard that you can see the Magic Kingdom's fireworks from the beach.

Photobucket

Can you believe this is in the lobby? The Polynesian is really a beautiful resort.

Since I had managed to read all of the books I'd brought along, we decided to hit up a bookstore on the way to the airport. We spent some time there browsing and I found a book. Eventually, we made it to the airport with plenty of time. We turned in our rental car and checked into our flight.

We found our gate and then waited for our time to board. And waited. And waited. I was getting antsy and checking my watch. Shouldn't we be boarding now? I got up and wandered over to our gate (Our gate was very close to two others and they all shared a large waiting area.) Oh, according to the sign at the gate, our flight is delayed. They finally decided it might be wise to announce that. Turns out our airplane couldn't leave wherever it was coming from due to a storm. So we waited. And waited. And waited. I was getting nervous because we were supposed to connect in Cincinnati and it wasn't looking good.

We finally got to board our plane and head to Cincinnati. We landed 5 minutes before our connecting flight was supposed to take off. I checked the monitor at our arrival gate and it looked like our flight was still there. I finally got to fulfill my Amazing Race fantasy and we RAN to the gate!

Unfortunately

The good news was that since it was Delta's fault, they put us up in a hotel for the night and gave us food vouchers. The bad news was that it was already 9:00 pm and nothing was open for food at the airport and the hotel wasn't in an area with restaurants. It did, however, have a shuttle that picked us up from the airport along with others from our flight.

The hotel people were nice and even gave us a king sized bed. However, I was not in the mood to spend the night in Cincinnati. I wanted to sleep in my own bed in my own house.

Photobucket

We're not at the Animal Kingdom Lodge anymore!

Since our bags were checked, we only had our carry-ons. And of course, I didn't pack any extra clothes or my medications in the carry-on. Delta gave us these toiletry cases, which helped, but it still wasn't my stuff.

Photobucket

Luckily, the next day we were able to get home and I vowed to never fly Delta again. And I learned to pack some extra clothes in my carry-on as well as my meds.

And finally, our honeymoon was over. We had a great time and I wouldn't change any of it except for our adventure getting home.
